Superferry Cancels Yet Again, Again

Superferry has for the 3rd? 4th? time extended their drydock to April 23. Meanwhile, the manufacturer of this sturdy vessel (sarcasm alert) received an engineering award for their terrific job in designing and manufacturing a vessel that has been unable to sail more than half the time it's been scheduled. (This is really true!)

Reporting from the rabbit hole,

Karen Chun

Like i said before WHY DID THEY GO W/ A CATAMARAN? It gets damaged WAY easier than a conventional boat. You don't see Matson, Young Brothers or NCL gettin as beat up as this!

Keep in mind the award came from a Mobile, Alabama, organization where this hunk-o-junk vessel was built. Of course they might think it deserved an award, they built it. The fact remains the hull was too weak and un-reinforced around the rudder posts, hardly deserving of a legitimate engineering award. That's why when it came across my Google Alerts, I chose not to even mention it.

Anon,

It's true the area between the two cat hulls is weaker and more suseptible to damage. Scott from Kauai also noticed that. It is also why Incat uses a trimaran M-hull instead of two catamaran hull. Incat's hulls for things like the JHSV are more structurally sound as a result.
