I emailed our County Council on this and Michelle Anderson emailed me back the text of a state statute which says that A&B is protected from liability when it allows the public to use the boat ramp.

How is it possible that we can spend $340,000,000 to build cruise ships and the Superferry their own docks, parking lots and terminal buildings but we can't scrape together enough money to fix our small boat ramp?

An anonymous poster left a comment which is illustrative of how little some malahini know of Hawaiian history and culture.

Save Maui. Paddlers and surfers out. Your recreation is not more important than us getting our goods on the shelves.

This shows a complete misunderstanding of the proposed Pier 5 dock. The dock is for recreational purposes, i.e. cruise ships and the Superferry.

We are faced between two competing recreational uses of Kahului Harbor: paddling, fishing and surfing used primarily by the residents of Maui vs cruising used primarily by tourists.

Paddlers, surfers and fisherman have co-existed happily with freight ever since the harbor was built. However the cruise ships and Superferry account for over 50% of the increased dock space in the last 5 years (figured from the 2025 Harbor Master Plan).

Rather than telling cruise ships to go elsewhere, Lingle proposes spending your tax dollars to build them their own terminal and dock. You'll be paying through the nose for this because they're paying for it by raising dock fees. (And they'll have to raise them big time to pay back 1/3 of a billion dollars!)

Sweet deal. Wouldn't you like the state to build your business facilities!

Yes, we all agree. Freight is very important. That's why the cruise ships and Superferry need to get off the freight docks right now...not in 6 years. This plan saves our local cultural and recreational activities, saves us money, and saves our freight.

You take up a big portion of the harbor that would be better served for commerce.

Actually, we don't interfere with freight at all! It is the recreational cruise ships that are interfering with freight.

I've seen the coal barge wait outside Kanaha for 3 days waiting for the cruise ships to leave so it could unload.

Why is DOT giving preference to cruise ships over freight? That just doesn't make sense!

You want Hawaiian culture? Go paddle and surf outside the harbor like the original Hawaiians did!!

Some of the current Hawaiians might see your attitude as lacking in respect.

Before the harbor was built, Kahului Bay was used by canoes, fishermen and surfers for over 1,000 years. We have been very obliging by allowing the harbor to take over our lands (Kahului Harbor is ceded lands...still belong to the Hawaiian people according the World Court)
